Narcos – EGX 2019

Reading Time: 2 minutes

It’s not always good when you have a game based on a TV show, or indeed a game, based on a game, based on a TV show. This is different though. Playing a few deaths into a 4X-cum-shooter is Narcos, Rise of the Cartels.

This is based, apparently, on a Netflix production. You know me though, I prefer to watch Masterchef than anything too action. So before anyone asks, I don’t know the comparison from one to the other. Narcos Rise of the Cartels is developed by Kuju and published by Curve Digital.

The game though is something that you will probably place on the fringe of my usual game. You have a move based element to getting members of your elite team across the game space intertwined with using their guns, or healing, or even reloading their guns! This means that you have to think far ahead about exposed you are leaving your swat team, or whether your police officer can reload his gun quicker than your leader can take out the enemy.

You have to build and take your team through a story-line of 1980’s Columbia, taking on the cartels and their wielding firepower. Certainly in the EGX playable demo, I was dying pretty quickly despite being as careful as I could to save myself!

I like the idea. I think it is introducing move based strategy on a small scale to a new audience. It might not induce the next wave of Crusader Kings III fans, but it’s that nice middle ground.

You can Wishlist Narcos now on Steam; due for release on 19th November. Over 18s can also visit their website.
